A Story of Adoption

We have a lot of people who ask us about adoption and how it works so I thought it would be nice to blog about our adoptions. First I will tell the general story and then over time I will share the experience that we had with each of our boys.

The beginning: For some people jumping into adoption takes months and even years to decide that adoption will work for their family. If you are looking at adoption and haven't been able to have your own children, this usually means you are infertile. A word that brings a lot of pain, heartache, anger, frustration, and confusion. For me, it was a very painful thing to go through. I had 3 miscarriages during a two year period and realized we may never have biological children.

Thankfully I had a great husband to lean on and a Father in Heaven to go to for help. I also was able to quickly put the pain aside and jump on the adoption band wagon. I am adopted and always hoped to adopt children as it blessed my life so much. But, to be honest, I always thought it would be later in our lives. It was never easy, miscarriages and infertility are terrible and bring great pain, but the adoption path was the beginning of healing.

When Jordan and I realized we may need to look at other options we weighed fertility treatments and adoption. For us we went straight for adoption, an unusual decision. Most couples we have meet don't go right to adoption. There is something in most people where they feel strongly about having their own Biological Children. For me, I didn't want the emotional turmoil of fertility treatments with the strong chances of spending so much money and getting no where. I wanted to adopt because I was able to put the money towards a goal I knew would eventually come true. There would be no monthly wondering, shelling out money for a hope of getting pregnant, and the physical hard ships of infertility treatments.

I'm not saying fertility is bad, it is for many couples, the option that will be best. For me and my husband we didn't want to go through fertility. We wanted adoption. So, we looked at agencies and called our church agency, LDS Family Services. We called and told them we wanted to adopt. They sent out a packet of information for us to read over. The process of adoption, what to expect, the fees, etc. We read, prayed and called them back.

Meeting one, was at our house. They meet with us, discussed what we wanted and how adoption would work. We then got more paperwork and filled it out and payed our non-refundable fee. Then began the long paperwork process.

That is the beginnings of adoption. For each couple it is different. I will post about the paperwork experience in the next stage.
